A Handler typically understands how the costumes work. They are there to help the Animator in and out of costume efficiently and safely.
Handler keeps track of the appearance schedule.
Handler makes sure the Costume looks the way it’s supposed to…nothing showing that shouldn’t be... elements sitting as they are supposed to... hair or clothing or props……
Handler takes care of minor costume repairs.
SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY
Handler guides the character, who has limited peripheral vision and limited mobility, to and from performance or meet and greet area.
Handler intervenes on behalf of character to make sure they arrive at their designated area on time.
Handler watches to make sure no one hits, trips, pulls, pushes or jumps on the character.
Handler watches to make sure no child is under foot, preventing possible injury to the child and/or the animator.
Handler is there in case something is wrong and the animator needs to extricate from the situation.
COMMUNICATION:
Handler communicates with client regarding scheduling and performance parameters.
Handler communicates with the public about the character and on behalf of the character to ensure a positive experience for the public.
Handler gives verbal cues to the Costume Animator in costume so that they are aware of children under foot, or children who are out of there vision area so that the character can respond.
Handler informs character if there is something a child has that they should be aware so they can better interact with child.
Handler is on the front line of crowd control.
The Handler maintains a flow to keep people moving so that eveyone has an opportunity to meet the character.
Handler makes sure only appropriate photographs are taken.
Handler helps to make sure the photograph taken is a good photograph (lighting, no one blocked, kids looking at camera, acceptable background.)
Often the Handler is the person taking the photos for the fans.
Handler does provide talking points so that people understand why the Character is present.
NO! The Handler cannot hand out premiums. It is a distraction from the primary function - Safety of the Mascot. If they are distracted by handing out premiums, they are not doing their job.
BRAND AMBASSADOR is a different function. And while everyone working at your event is to some degree a “Brand Ambassador”, the Handler does not fill this function. They are aware of other activities you’re doing. They can mention talking points. They can also encourage people where to go after the Character interaction. But their primary function is safety of the Character and controlling the fan interaction.
Handler does take photographs for you, the client, to document the event.
Handler assists the animator on breaks. Rarely does the animator remove the costume completely. Therefore the Handler makes sure the animator has whatever they need..drinks..snacks…
Please don't under estimate the value of a professional handler.
Please don't short change your Costume Annimator, your audience or yourselves by engaging an amateur!
